5 Things To Do After Installing OpenSUSE 13.2

OpenSUSE 13.2 is out. It is one of the major updates to OpenSUSE distro. OpenSUSE 13.2 brings kernel 3.16, GNOME 3.14.1, KDE 4.14 and much more important features. Most OpenSUSE users have already to upgraded to 13.2. But there are some basic things user requires to do after installation of OpenSUSE 13.2. Here is the list of tasks you need to perform after installing OpenSUSE 13.2.
1. Update
OpenSUSE usually pushes Day 1 update. Early adopters report some important bugs and issues which are fixed in day 1 update. It is very important for the users to perform update after installation of system. Updating openSUSE 13.2 is very simple. Users require to run following commands to update the system- zypper refresh zypper up
2. Additional Software
openSUSE 13.2 packs all free softwares that are offered in almost all Linux Distributions. Users have to do a little extra effort to install their favorite applications. You can either do that using individual repositories or you can simply add Pacman repository. Follow the simple steps to do that. Open Yast > Software Repositories > Add > Community Repositories > Select Pacman. This will enable installation of your applications using terminal. Users can use “zyper install name-of-application” command to install the software.
3. Multimedia Codecs
openSUSE 13.2 lacks important multimedia codecs due to licensing issues. But a simple command takes care of it. Make sure that you have installed Pacman and run the following command.
zypper install libxine2-codecs k3b-codecs ffmpeg lame gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-ugly-orig-addon gstreamer-plugins-libav libdvdcss2
You may have to install vlc codecs additionally. You can use the following command to install vlc codecs. zypper install vlc-codecs
4. Nvidia AMD/ATI Drivers
If you have additional discrete graphics card then default video driver in openSUSE 13.2 might support it. But in some cases, users require proprietary driver for Games, 3D applications or similar reasons of high graphic usage. Users can visit openSUSE website and download appropriate graphic drivers. Installation of graphic drivers is very easy task in openSUSE 13.2.
